Summer 2008
Age Concern have reported that by 2021 there will be a million and a half more people aged 50-69 and almost a million fewer people aged 16-49. The total population will grow by 3.3 million.
In an ageing population, there will be an increased incidence of Dementia, Parkinsons Disease and Stroke with a level of Dementia in those with Learning Disabilities for the first time.
Not only do we need to see improved opportunities for older people but the personalisation agenda should move towards coherent, more personalised support to enable a greater level of choice. We must look to establishing policies that help older people with health needs remain in work.
Likewise, the Carer’s agenda must improve accessibility to respite care, financial support and ‘right time and place’ information. As a result of our Carers event, carers wanted to see fewer questionnaires and better, more appropriate communication that listened and heard not just ticked boxes.
